Local Congressional Reps Join Call for More Gun Control

Three congressional representatives from districts in the San Gabriel Valley have lent their support to more restrictive gun legislation after the mass shooting in a Connecticut school horrified the nation. What say you?

Congressional representatives from three San Gabriel Valley districts have joined the call for tighter restrictions on gun ownership following the Connecticut shootings that claimed the lives of 20 children and eight adults.

Congressional representatives Judy Chu (D-El Monte), Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and Grace Napolitano (D-Santa Fe Springs) have all spoken in favor of more gun control in the days after the Newtown school shooting. California Sen.

Schiff told MSNBC that he supports the renewal of the assault weapons ban that congress allowed to expire in 2004. He said the strength of the National Rifle Association's lobbying efforts have made gun control laws difficult to pass.

"It is enormously difficult to take on the NRA," Schiff told MSNBC’s Craig Melvin over the weekend. "They put a lot of money in against you and so it's a challenge but it's going to have to be done. We just can't keep going through tragedy after tragedy like this, it's got to stop."

Chu also lent her support to the assault weapons ban in a written statement released Monday.

"As these violent tragedies continue to plague communities all across the country, it is clear that Congress must act to reclaim our security," Chu wrote. "That means reinstating the assault weapons ban and addressing mental health issues within in our society. I believe we should also prohibit large capacity magazines and fix our broken background system."

Chu said she'll use her position on the House Judiciary Committee to push for tighter gun control laws.

"Because if we act responsibly today, we can prevent another mass casualty event from happening tomorrow," she wrote. We simply cannot afford to delay another day."

Napolitano, who has earned an "F" from the NRA for her support for gun control laws, said in a statement Friday that she will push for stricter gun ownership laws and greater access to mental health services.

"[Friday's] tragic events shed light on the continued discussion and action needed in Congress to address the issues of mental health and gun safety," Napolitano wrote. "We must all work together to secure and protect the federal funding needed to carry out mental health services and programs for all Americans. We must ensure that mental health support is made available for all children, their families, first responders, and the community of Newtown to help deal with this tragic event.”

Diane Feinstein said Monday that she will re-introduce legislation to ban assault weapons as soon as congress is back in session.

What do you think? Should the assault weapons ban be reinstituted? Will more gun control reduce the recurrence of mass shootings?

Now, since I have FULLY gained your attention, and I know that I have, let me add how to make youself as exceptionally popular with the people. No longer will you need to use Vote COUNT Fraud, to get elected. You will be genuinely loved. Obama becomes wildly the most popular President in the (most recent) History of our nation, by signing onto it. And it is EASY to DO. Change the US Dollar F*R*O*M (non)Federal AND (no)Reserve Notes over to the IVAMU Standard for Establishing the Value of Currency. It is easy and simple to do and it permits you to gain the moral highground, by returning to the Responsiblilites of the Congress to be using gold and silver as currency. And, it takes into consideration the probability that the (non)Federal AND (no)Reserve has used its position to STEAL and to REMOVE our nations wealth, some assume to still be in Fort Knox and taken (stolen) off shore, probably to England. Yes, the Federal Reserve is NOT Federal, but it is a Private Monopolistic Company, pretending to be a government. PRETENDING. And the IRS is its' OTHER privately owned ugly little sister, acting within its unlawful powers not granted by any clause of the US Constitution, as the Official Collection Agency of the same private company, the (non)Federal and (no)Reserve. AGAIN< pretending to be a government. You can Restore the economy in as little as 24 Hours. "The ECONOMIC CRISIS IS OVER" if you truly want it. http://www.ivamu.com/ivamupressrelease.htm

BAN Zoloff and BAN Prozac. Every single one of these mass shooters has been under the deblilitating influences of these same kinds of drugs, without a single expception. THAT is where our FOCUS ought to be, not wasting time seeking to VIOLATE We the people along with our RIGHTS. Plus, how is it that this shooter, AND the Batman shooter, BOTH have Fathers about to Testify in the ongoing LIBOR Scandel? yet separated by THOUSANDS of miles? "No, don't see anything there, folks, just move along now. Don't listen to this. Nothing unusual here. Happens all the time."

There are many forms of treatment, and meds are not the only solution. You may have the right to have a gun, just not any gun you want such as an automatic weapon. Justify the need.

And still the sign says "Leave a Comment" !! First, I am sorry I offended a person with crude joke. It was crude, butt, the absurdity of it probably did make some laugh. I think the comments on brain chemistry altering drugs is worthy of thought. We have sewn the seeds for this for decades. America is addicted to violence, period. The collapse of the American home has created allot of angry people. Even in these posts there are plenty of examples of skewed thinking. The first steps should be to make schools safer. The shooter was able to carry an assault rifle across the parking lot without being seen by anyone who could have made a difference. Autopsies showed assault rifle was used. Christmas won;t be the same this year....b....
ROBERT E. FISHBACK December 19, 2012 at 03:22 PM
Speaking of skewed thinking...how about this....from now on, boxes of ammo will contain three shells containing a 50/50 mix of black powder and cyanide. Pay to play !
Christine Evelyn December 19, 2012 at 05:41 PM
As a Country and People we need to commit to better mental health care, including improved intervention is schools; we need to ban all assalt type weapons (including retroactively) and we must eliminate the possibility of purchase of any gun without background checks (that is at gun shows and on the internet). Until we can do these things, tragedies like this will continue to happen. cme

Thank you Mr. Lowndes for finally getting around to the product which you are selling. It took you a crashing long time to get there, and I hope you've now "shot your wad". As for your product, I wouldn't pay as much as change of a fiat-currency penny for it. Good luck to you. As for the rest of the argument, everything's been said about 1,600 times over. If you like a very eloquent take on Newtown which uses about 1/1000th of the words Mr. Lowndes took, go to the link below. I don't believe there is going to be an all or nothing solution and that gun control alone will solve the problem. However, I believe those who support restricting and reducing access to dangerous weapons will be dissappointed when they get much less than what they ask for or really need to happen to improve the amount of violence and death caused by guns. I wonder why congress removed the laws in 2004? What was the gun violence before this removal and since then?

Well said!

wow! Finally an individual who knows the real meaning of the second amendment, instead of claiming their right to use that right to shoot at will to prove their point. Kudos to you Ellen for knowing what most of the gun righteous seem to be oblivious to. Our forefathers would be proud of you for being one of the few that are aware what they they meant when they wrote it.

Gayle, I have heard the Reagan comment for decades. But I believe you eliminated the prevailing paradigm of the day. Up through the 1950's people were far too easily thrown in what were mostly bad institutions. The shift to solve that begun in the sixties. Combine that with the landmark civil rights decissions, and the pendulum swung to far on the other side by the eighties. How much each of the events weighs on the overall tradgedy is debated, and usually falls down party lines. I am by no means an expert, but Reagan is by no means the sole reason for the realease of the mentals. To infinity...and beyond---------> Buzzmart......not AWM, Gayle
Gayle M. Montgomery December 19, 2012 at 11:25 PM
Marty, Love, what is AWM? There needs to be a balance between the old institutions and the conditions that exist today, Marty. I work in Downtown LA and sometimes have to step to the other side of the street when someone's voices inside their head get them agitated and hollering. It's simply not acceptable to have this level of mental unwellness as the norm. And I'm thinking Kenneth's protestations about drugs are ones he's personally familiar with. Just saying. He protests them just a little too vociferously. I have concerns about meds myself and have taken them for depression kicking and screaming. That said, I worked my tush off in therapy so as to be able to get off of them. Some people have electro-chemical wiring issues and a genetic predisposition toward mental unhealth. We live in a society that seems to glorify violence and deify the mentally unwell. Something needs to be done.
Gayle M. Montgomery December 19, 2012 at 11:29 PM
The more Lowndes posts, the more convinced I am that he shouldn't have guns. The rantings and delusions sound dangerous. On another thread he contended there is a passle of Chinese down south. Something like they were going to invade our country or some such. Sigh.
ROBERT E. FISHBACK December 19, 2012 at 11:45 PM
I am so tired of all of this...It reminds me of looking down on a bowl of mixed mental salad...Yes, I can just avoid reading....Here is yet another observation of mine. Person kind was not and is not equipped to deal with the frantic multi-tasking, unrelated electronic blitzes we have created for our selves. Too much noise, too many ideas crashing in from all sides. I discovered something really wonderful the other day; I turned the T.V and computer OFF...My word. what a wonderful sound the sound of silence is. Hats off to Simon and Garfunkle. Also, hats off to the females....They have proven a superior control and a measuring ability in what they say. Right now, the best "drug" is called...LMAO....Speaking of that...I am a lazy sort and the City told me I must mow my lawn. I admit, I let it go for a long time. I did mow, and found a car. My missing VW. Had to call Police and cancel my stolen car report. Best way to describe my VW is...Needs work.

Blaming the NRA for shooting deaths is like blaming AAA for vehicle deaths. Leave the NRA out of it. Did you know???? "In the right to bear arms debate, pro-gun Americans point to Switzerland, where almost every adult male is legally required to possess a gun. One of the few nations with a higher per capita rate of gun ownership than the United States, Switzerland has virtually no gun crime. Therefore, argue the pro-gunners, America doesn't need gun control." http://www.guncite.com/swissgun-kopel.html

Hey Gayle. Awm? A couple of days ago you said "Marty, the angry white male". I filed that in the humor file of my brain even without the LOL atatched. As you know I trail run all the time. I am not exercising, I am balancing myself and doing my daily endorphin dropping, ADD neutralizing, necessity. When one is married (I am quitting), to someone who has given the silent treatment 24 hours a day for 15 years, running in the mountains is my friend. Damn, now I finally said to much personal info. Long way around saying I understand "helpers". I have never used them, but the addictive runners high works for me.

I am 73 and there are a few goals not reached yet. I want to be "installed" what ever that means..I read of this and that being installed. I also want to be "lauded" I wonder if it would tickle....I read here of "reps" Isnt that the number of push ups you do.? I hope it does not mean representatives of the people at large..That is virtually impossible, and probably explains why reps make no difference at all unless they are mulit faceted "Toadies" (Look that one up).
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 02:35 AM
These folks are not "Liberals." Liberals FAVOR the expansion of personal Liberty. These folks do not. They have come down on the wrong side of History. They knowingly, willingly risk throwing our nation into open Civil War conflict, also known as Revoution. Estimates are that 65% of the US population has guns that they own. Maybe 25% will turn them in when the Dictatorship DEMANDS they be turned in. Leaving us with 75% whol will NOT, under any imaginable set of circumstances. Do the Math, and you will easily see how this will turn out. The Federal government will face a severe and very public humiliation for their attempt, and a total defeat. They do know and understand this, which means We the people need to expect still more False Flag Terrorist attacks. No doubt already well into the Planning stages. They, as did their predessor King George, will seek to use foreign troops, and possible destruction of an entire American City. They have the techology, even without using the Nuclear "option." This is going to get nasty, real quick, if these folks carry out their Announced Public desire to VIOLATE you and me, and their OATH NOT to ever do so. Far too many Americans are Awake to what's up for them not to be recognized for what it is.. The FIGHT is the SAME fight it's always been: Liberty and Freedom Vs Tyranny.
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 02:43 AM
If this is truly about the protection of innocents, you have not yet demonstrated any proof that what you may propose will do any of the things you claim. The risk of your proposals are way too high to be acceptable. Show us the proof. FIRST. History already shows us that only Evil will benefit. Have you ever heard the phrase, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely"? "One who has total authority is very likely to abuse his position. (This phrase was used by the British historian Lord Acton: "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.")
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 03:00 AM
(Part 2) You haven't seen anything yet, when it comes to corrupted power being concentrated under ONE Monarchy, one Dictator. Indefinite Detention. FEMA Camps. "UP THE REALITY!" "NO KING BUT KING JESUS!" "FREEDOM!" Worst of all, all of this is but a scratch upon the surface of their malovent and deadly intentions towards all of the rest of us. Including the dingbats who do not have a single clue as to the Reality. How soon will we be experiencing the total collapse of all purchasing power of the alledged USD? Understand what THAT means? No food and no fuels will be delivered, only sporadic deliveries with total chaos to greet them. So many remain clueless, but yet, there is hope, as folks continue to Awaken.
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 03:00 AM
No, it isn't, Jill. There is barely a pretense to it to suggest it has anything to do with the protection of any innocents. People who fail to learn from History are doomed to repeating all of its mistakes. Taking away the RIGHTS as Recognized and Codified in the Bill of Rights is asinine. It is not progressive, it is regressive. It is a throwback to all the Tyrants and their Tyranny of the last 100 years. It is a major step backwards, not forward. It is time for cwertain federal reps to resign, or to apologize for this foolish declaratioon of their attemtps to place a wall around us and our 2nd Amendment RIGHTS. The 2nd is there to protect and maintain all the rest. Go to youtube and look at all the videos that show we are already living ijn a Police State. Who shot AT the people in Anaheim? Who Murdered the innocent in Fullerton?
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 03:02 AM
Please stop openly telling us how you personally intend to VIOLATE We the people(and Your OATH), to get back at one dead white murderer. We the people are NOT him. This shooter is not a reason, nor can it ever become a reason. Pass legislation congruent with your OATH, and encouage the states to pass Laws that ARM the Teachers, instead. If you do not trust a teacher being armed and able to protect students in any school, why would anyone trust them with their chilldren in the first place? Or, assign a full time officer with a gun to each school. Preferably BOTH. And JOIN http://www.OATHKeepers.org/ - its ALL about KEEPING your OATH. Own it! Capice?
Kenneth Lowndes December 20, 2012 at 03:17 AM
Gayle, I am probably not focusing enough on this medical issue. Your personal honesty is the kind of stuff driving most of this debate, spoken about or not. You coming forward is a good move. My own belief is that if any one finds themselves afraid of what they fear what they might do, it is a legitimate issue. Getting OFF the drugs that adversely affect you is very important. There are some good ones, but none since the 1980's. They have been engineered and designed to cause mayhem. About 6% have real trouble. MK Ultra was and is for real. However, getting the focus "stuck in stupid" is no way to increase our safety concerns. Attempting to ban or regulate our personal FREEDOM to own whatever we wish is crazy talk. It does not even come close to increased personal security concerns. You make and prepare BEFORE the need arises, right? Just look at how badly all those people are still suffering from the aftermath of the Sandy hurricane. Preparation seemed rediculous to many, until it was too late. I have a lot of friends in South Jersey, and many are still suffering.

By the way, until the new Congress is seated on January 3, our area is still represented by Congressman David Dreier who is retiring then. That said, we're still paying him and, when he retires, he will get a pension substantively higher than most will ever see on Social Security and bennies that put Medicare to shame. Been working with the Foothill Action Team on the fiscal cliff (see TheAction.org) and have letters from concerned constituents to deliver to him. Calls to his local office got a funky ring, so we sent someone out there to check and lo and behold, in the middle of this fiscal crisis, he's closed up shop. Oh, but wait. It gets worse. I called his DC office on Tuesday night. Left a clear and succinct message asking about the local office. Did I get a call back today? Nope. The man is basically MIA at a truly critical time and should be taken to task.
