Monrovia City Council to Consider Plastic Bag Ban This Fall

City staff is studying the bans implemented in other cities and will present options to the council in October.

The Monrovia City Council will consider implementing a ban on plastic bags this fall after city staff finishes studying reusable bag ordinances adopted by other municipalities.

City staff is looking at the bans instituted in other communities to put together a proposal for the council to vote on some time in October, City Manager Laurie Lile said during the council's regular meeting Tuesday.

The city began looking at the issue after a group of residents called on the council to ban plastic bags during a council meeting in January.

Lile said she intends to involve the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce and its members in the analysis of the issue because they will be affected by any ban that might be implemented.

Councilman Alexander Blackburn made it known that he strongly supports a bag ban during the July 2 meeting.

"I can’t see any possible reason for not implementing this ban other than we’re just too lazy to think and take a few moments before we go to the grocery store," he said.
