Napolitano, Chu Respond to End of Federal Shutdown

Congress voted Wednesday night to end the shutdown of the federal government and raise the debt ceiling. President Obama signed to bill today.

U.S. Rep. Grace F. Napolitano, who represents Monrovia, responded to the bipartisan agreement President Obama signed today to reopen the federal government and raise the debt ceiling.

The following is the Democratic lawmaker's statement:

“We are glad to finally be able to pay our bills, put our government back to work, and help all those who were unfairly treated as a result of the federal government shutdown. We trust that our colleagues will not make a habit of threatening default as a way of reaching an agreement and put an end to governing in a crisis environment. This is especially critical as both parties come together over the next few months to reach a long-term budget solution that reduces spending but is fair to hardworking Americans.”

“We must understand this unnecessary government shutdown should have never happened. It has cost our economy, our country, and our citizens $24 billion, according to S&P, money that could have been used toward debt reduction. We look forward to working with the President on his pledge to pass comprehensive immigration reform soon as well as other issues relating to our economic recovery; such as investing in transportation, water supply, and other critical infrastructure, in order to create jobs and grow our economy.”

U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, whose district also includes a small portion of Monrovia, issued a statement Wednesday night after Congress' voted in favor of the bill. Chu, D-Monterey Park, had announced earlier this month that would forgo her salary during the shutdown.

“Tonight, Congress voted to end the government shutdown, avert the looming debt crisis, and bring 16 days of national disgrace to a close. But this fix is temporary, and we cannot afford to be dragged through the same process again in a few short months. Governing by hostage taking is a strategy doomed to fail, and we can only hope the people who pursued it have learned that lesson. The American people deserve better leadership for their tax dollars.”
