Pasadena Humane Society to Provide Animal Control Services for Monrovia

The Monrovia City Council approved the contract on Tuesday night.

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA will provide animal control services to the city of Monrovia starting Jan. 1

The Monrovia City Council approved the contract at its meeting Tuesday night, according to a news release.

The one-year agreement totals $165,856 an includes options for renewal in subsequent years, according the staff report for council.

The Monrovia Police Department has provided animal control services for the city since 2007.  However, a change of course was needed because the Inland Valley Humane Society recently told Monrovia that it no longer wants to provide sheltering services for the city, according a staff report prepared by Police Chief Jim Hunt.

The Inland Valley Humane Society's contract expires Dec. 31.

In addition, the two animal control officers have applied for and been hired for open positions with the Monrovia Police Department, according to Police Chief Jim Hunt. That means that the city is going to be without animal control officers as of Jan. 1.

The Pasadena Humane Society contract includes animal rescue, handling dog barking complaints, investigating cruelty reports, picking up and transporting stray animals, and issuing dog licenses, according to officials.  The agency also will provide access to affordable spay/neuter an vaccination clinics.

“We are happy to partner with the City of Monrovia to provide the best care possible for its animals,” Steve McNall, president/CEO of the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA said in a statement. “We are looking forward to being an invaluable community resource for animals and pet owners.”

Other cities that contract with the Human Society include Arcadia, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena.
