Plymouth Elementary Awarded $6,000 for Winning Fitness Challenge

The Monrovia elementary school was a regional winner in a Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports contest.

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports cut two checks totalling $6,000 Tuesday to after it was named a regional winner of the organization's statewide fitness contest.

The Governor's Challenge competition tasked schools with meeting a range of fitness goals with the goal of improving the overall health of students across the state. All 433 of Plymouth's students competed in the contest by being active for at least 30 minutes three days a week. The students totalled a "remarkable" 10,817 hours of physical activity during the competition, according to a news release from the Governor's Council.

"The school’s support of good nutrition was highlighted through its school chef (who) taught monthly nutrition classes and its providing of “Tasting Trios,” a quick nutritious snack for students using only 3 ingredients that they can easily replicate at home," the release states.

Principal Suzanne Heck was presented with a $5,000 check for the purchase of fitness equipment and a $1,000 CVS gift card for the purchase of school supplies in a ceremony at the school Tuesday.

Plymouth was one of 13 schools in the Los Angeles area and one of 116 schools state-wide named as a finalist in the contest in June. It is one of 11 schools state-wide to win a $6,000 regional award.
