Thousands Still Without Power in Monrovia, Duarte

Southern California Edison is still working to restore full power to the neighboring cities.

Though an an expected heavy windstorm Thursday night, thousands of customers in Monrovia and Duarte remain without power, officials said.

About 5,100 homes and businesses are still blacked out in Monrovia as of Friday afternoon, but Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said electricity could be fully restored sometime later in the day. About 1,600 households are without power in Duarte, where officials opened up the city's community center to accommodate displaced residents who may be without electricity until Sunday, according a city official.

Monrovia officials updated their damage estimates caused by the windstorm Friday morning in a news conference outside city hall. A total of 252 city by the wind that damaged 31 cars, 23 fences and 29 buildings. No structures had to be "red-tagged"--closed for safety risks--according to Lutz.

Many residents remain without internet and cable television access, but the exact number is not known, Lutz said.

No one has been arrested since an , and no one has had to be sent to the hospital from any related injuries, Lutz said.

The city has five building inspectors and six public works crews "working around the clock" to clean up the extensive debris that remains in city streets. .

Many traffic signals remain inoperable and officials again asked residents to treat such intersections as they would a four-way stop.
