Just steps away from the Citrus College campus in Glendora, construction crews are working on the Metro Gold Line’s next stop – Azusa.
The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority and Azusa city officials toured the site of the future Metro Gold Line station in Azusa Tuesday, where initial construction has been underway since last year.
Construction crews have been working on the final four-mile stretch from Pasadena to the Azusa/Glendora border, working on the foundation, clearing brush along the path and building drainage, according to construction manager Jim Holmes. The segment is slated to be completed in 2015.
Construction crews will begin work on the grade crossing at Dalton Avenue next month, with a full closure of the street Feb. 18.
Holmes said so far, construction on segment four, the stage from Miller Brewery to Barranca Avenue, has been going according to schedule, despite conflicts with the freight train path, access to land owned by nearby development projects and property owners encroaching on Metro land.
It really takes a lot of effort from the community and individuals and property owners along the alignment,” said Holmes. “It really needs to be a cooperative effort to allow us to do our job.”
Azusa Mayor Joe Rocha said Azusa residents and students from Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College are anticipating the Metro Gold Line’s arrival, which is expected to alleviate traffic along the 210 freeway and campus parking problems.
“Students from Citrus and APU said ‘Build it and we will ride it’ and that’s what I hear all over town, and they’re looking forward to the day we will complete it,” said Rocha.
The public is also invited to visit the project’s information office at 1300 W. Optical Drive, Suite 500, in Azusa.
Information about construction and noise impacts will be sent out to area residents. More information about future road closures can be found on the Construction Authority’s website at foothillextension.org.
