Who Is the Monrovia Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Barack Obama their person of the year. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Barack Obama as their Person of the Year.

“For finding and forging a new majority, for turning weakness into opportunity and for seeking, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union, Barack Obama is TIME's 2012 Person of the Year,” Time managing editor Richard Stengel explained in his note to readers.

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Monrovia’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse?”

Tell us your nomination in the comments section below!

Tom Adams December 27, 2012 at 05:20 pm
Without a doubt, Kim Rhode! Kim is not only the only American to win medals as an individual in five olypmpics, she's nice too! Kim goes out of her way to share her experience with others and does all she can to teach little girls that they can do the same, not needing to be held back by gender. Monrovia has always been and will always be full of wonderful people, Kim Rhode defines it.

Janie Duncan is my pick. She does more charity work by accident, than most people do on purpose. She has raised thousands of dollars in cash and supplies for the Boy Scouts from local merchants for years. She gathers donations for homeless, and poor during the holiday season. She organizes a cookie exchange to raise money for MS every year. She is president of Monrovia Rockhounds, and has opened her house to thousands of school kids, and scouts to see her extensive rock and dinosaur bone collection. She has taken some of her collection and given lectures at dozens of area schools. Janie is what Monrovia is all about.

Kevorkian is correct. That Janie is hard to keep up with. Golden Oak recipient from PTA, Several awards from Boy and Girl Scouts. Look no further,

The Monrovia Wildcat Football Team!! Without a doubt. These boys have accomplished a lot this season. They made our little city very proud.

We gather as Monrovians on Friday nights at the Don Montgomery Sports Complex to cheer on our beloved Wildcats. This has been an annual tradition for decades, but never have we celebrated success like we did this year. Monrovia High School was the talk of the San Gabriel Valley News Press on blogs and in print since January of 2012, even being named as the pre-season #1 football team in all of the San Gabriel Valley by a popular local prep sports blog.
Therefore, I would like to nominate Ryan Maddox, head football coach of the Monrovia High School Wildcats. This year, Ryan lead our boys to winning our third consecutive Mid-Valley Division CIF Championship. Our local football team was also invited to participate in and host the California CIF Division III State playoffs; a first ever honor bestowed to ANY school in the San Gabriel Valley. During the five years under Coach Maddox's leadership, the Wildcats have been in five CIF semi-final games and four consecutive CIF finals. The Monrovia players have played in 20 post season games in the last 5 years; that is equivalent to two full regular seasons! Our team is 25-0 in Rio Hondo League play over the past five years. Our Seniors, who wear three championship rings, have never lost a league game. (continued below)

(continued from above)
Winning football games is a residual of Coach Maddox's focus on the complete young man. He stresses sound academics, strong work ethic, and high character standards in all of our boys. Monrovia High School Football has placed student athletes in higher education institutions such as UCLA, University of Utah, UC Davis, Chico State, Adams State College, Cal Lutheran, and many more, including numerous boys that serve our country in the military.. Coach Maddox is a devoted husband and proud father of two young children and lives by the creed of "Faith - Family - Football". Along with his efforts as an exemplary social studies teacher and his commitment to the families of Monrovia, I am very proud to nominate Coach Ryan Maddox as Monrovia's Person of the Year. He is the model that we want all our boys to follow.

Tough call between her and Coach Maddox, but I think Mr. Adams has it right.

Oh Please, Please take a look at all the working class in menial jobs. They aren't coming here withRead More bags of money or people with it. They aren't getting expensive care from us. They go to the county and wait hours on end.

I am totally against anything re: amnesty until boarders are secured. It ticks me off to see momsRead More with lots of kids and you know darn well we are paying for them. If we supposedly continue paying for all these kids, rewarding illegals nothing gets solved. The same is to be said for the other visitors??

Why does it seem more acceptable for the Chinese. They have more resources to get their newbornsRead More pictures at the arcadia post office.

See other post about this: It needed to happen...(Ancient Burial Ground that was desecrated) but IRead More maintain we should get some sort of "cleansing" or burn some incense/sage or call for an exorcism. I believe the evil mojo needs to be banished before we build again.........

Hi Therese, I am good friends with Star Shields. He is a busy face painter, and often needs back-upRead More either at the Summer festival in Laguna Beach, now underway, or with one of his other commitments. If you're interested, I would be happy to give you his contact details via email.

Hi Donna! Star is a good friend of mine too!!! He is more an airbrush artist (and a darn goodRead More one!!) then a face painter. But he is truly a legend in his craft. I have been lucky enough to work with him and learn from him too! I just wish he wasn't so far away :( Nice to hear from you!

Old fashioned country vet "patchin' up" was some of the cool stuff I was taught growingRead More up. Splinting a bird's wing or leg, getting a thorn out of a slightly infected cat or dog paw was part of learning. I am NOT saying to eliminate/not see a REAL vet, however some things can be handled at home with a bit of basic medical knowledge and Bactine/hot clean water and towels/tweezers and some loving hands to hold Fido or Snowball when you can do it yourself. I am already bracing myself for the angry openly hostile messages this post might draw, so it's OK if you feel the need to do so. Watching some of my older friends who have limited income spend THOUSANDS of dollars for a beloved pet out of pressure/and what I call "pusher's guilt" sorta made me feel like mentioning that in the old days, some of the animal care was done by a wise farm woman/man...not all vets are crooks, and not all pet needs need put you in the poor house.

I love the old farmers remedies, particularly for mange however when dealing with elderly animalsRead More and certain conditions you just get around it. The farmers remedies are often slow working causing more pain then an animal needs to go through. I try holistic meds quite often for some bacterial infections and they are slow too. Cats in particular are difficult treat. They are great in some situations but in others the it is not appropriate. I will attempt the at home first then the vet. My recent situation was a neglected kitty I rescued with a 1.25 lb cyst I had no idea she had the cyst just thought she was matted. I was trying to get her shaved. Kitty's don't cooperate for though things. One thing led to another she ends up on the operating table. No rescue groups would help me and that's where my anger is directed. I have been donating to different groups monthly for more then 20 years. At one point three different groups at the same time. No one helped me when I needed it. I'm done.

@Lynn: Reading your posts I felt some anger FOR you. HUGE animal lover here, and ALL my pets areRead More rescues/fosters except for the Robo dwarf hamster. Love my cats, and know there just some things you can't do to a kitty without risking kitty AND your own safety. What you have experienced was pretty much the exact thing I saw some older friends go thru...Care about their pets, want to get help, and can't seem to get any or get SOME but with hidden costs and "guilt trips" at the end. If no one said it, thanks for helping critters out and giving when you could. Sorry it was not rewarded.

Love you Donna. Your comment should have been "Poltergeist get ""thee""Read More behind me"!!!!! All in fun.

I am glad to hear she is good. I don't do facebook so I will simply take it that she will commentRead More again.
