Wood-Burning Fireplaces Prohibited on New Years Eve in Monrovia

By City News Service

Wood-fired heating will be prohibited starting at midnight tonight, and lasting 24 hours into New Years Eve, because of high smog levels and stagnant air.

The "no burn day" order will be in effect in Los Angeles and Orange counties, and much of the Inland Empire, with a few exceptions, said officials at the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Persons who have wood as their sole source of hear, or those living above the 3,000-foot elevation, are exempt. Also exempt are persons with low income.

The no-burn order is also not effect in the Coachella Valley. Persons seeking information about the order can look at www.airalerts.org and entering their zip codes.

Go buy some marijuana, get very "high", then argue that you are clearly elevated above 3000ft. Good luck. I shall watch the news and see how it turns out for you. :)

We can't complain about smog and smoke (which most folks do) and then act as if we personally should not be "inconvenienced" by changes to make things healthier. How many people believe, year-round, that our air is "healthy enough"? What I burn today stays here in the basin as smoke & fumes for a LONG time after. Thank you, Patch, for posting the SCAQMD notice!

Or perhaps folks would prefer we disband the SCAQMD and all air quality regulators and regulations? Those of us native to So. Cal. know the delights of being on local roads with only 1-block visibilty on a warm summer day, back in the 1950s - 1960s. And the folks in the low areas of the valleys got to breathe it in a more concentrated form all night, too. Yummmmm! Does anyone really want to go back to that?

O for the love of.....I WAS KIDDING...mostly. Sheesh. O.K. so I was at the "Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center" most of the day today, and using the court computers to pass the time in the juror waiting area, I saw the comments on this thread and it's a darn good thing I couldn't sign in and comment again as my mood was not festive and I was in a super snarky mood.....Claire, at this age and time in my life, I have no idea where I'd score some "grass" and with my luck, I'd get arrested instantly...I will stick to the legal mood enhancers (why alcohol is legal and MJ isn't is weird to me...) So back to topic: LOOK I get that we need to pay attention to air quality and all that, Kate K., I really do...as a native to So. Cal I remember days so bad you couldn't see the foothills from Monrovia High. However, perhaps you could understand I had this whole FIRE PIT OF AWESOME planned for my rather sedate Old Person Ringing In The New Year Thing going on. Now, I will have to take my merry -making OUTDOORS and frighten the neighbors. I really hope you don't live on my street Kate...truly sorry Monrovians who live near by for what you may witness...It may not be pretty, but it will be festive...I might have a few adult beverages, BBQ bacon on the front law, and pass it out to passersby as a New Year token of my esteem and well wishes to my fellow Monrovians. If bacon or partial old person nudity (Gonna rock the baby New Year diaper! O YEA!) and hi-jinks and festive-ness are offensive, please stay back behind the float viewing area thank you.

And since I have been to this court house multiple times and had no idea who Clara was, I looked it up. She was a bad-assed female lawyer, the first one on the west coast. Google her; she could kick your butt legally and probably physically all while wearing that uncomfortable corset and bustle.

Adorable Rubberband, one reason alcohol is still legal and mj really shouldn't be is because most folks SMOKE mj.... which makes it a second-hand smoke hazard for those nearby and yet another air pollutant. Alcohol tends to only harm those consuming it, unless they are excessive and act out (drive, hit, lose their jobs, etc.). Pot smoke is still 2nd-hand smoke. I will never understand why so many of the same folks who get all huffy about 2nd-hand tobacco smoke are all in favor of mj smoke whereverer/whenever. Smoke is bad for lungs. Smokers of any substance take away MY right to choose whether to ingest smoke or not.

O.K. You completely win this one Kate...You got all rational and sane on me, and I have no real point to stand on except if you wanna count "stompy whiny baby fit-having" as a legit means of communication. Had my impotent mini-rage fit and now am back to listening and learning (and un-learning).................... And, I haven't had any alcohol (today or yesterday) or caffeine (today) or nicotine (since I quit smoking in November) so I'm super sharp and on top of all things now ......................Feel free to laugh hysterically those who KNOW differently......... O the things I love are killing me..............
