Two Citrus College students have been selected to the 2013 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team.
Michael Li of West Covina and Miquel Benigno Villanueva of Azsua were selected to be a part of the Academic Team.
Li and Villanueva are among the 67 California community college students receiving the honor during a special ceremony in Sacramento March 6.
Although the actual team placements will not be revealed until late February, Citrus College has already been notified that both of its nominees are among the honorees.
Nominations to the team are based on excellent academic performance and service to the college and community.
Each community college in the country nominates two students for the All-American Academic Team, which is sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society and the Community College League. The nominees are then ranked according to grade point average, extracurricular activities, and community service. The first 60 students are named to the national team. Then, approximately 40 to 50 students from each state are placed on the first or second state team according to rank.
“The California Community College system consists of 112 schools in 72 districts and serves approximately 2.8 million students annually. It is outstanding that two Citrus College students are among the top community college students in the state,” said Dr. Geraldine M. Perri, president of Citrus College, in a written statement. “This is a prestigious honor and the entire college community is extremely proud of these impressive individuals.”
