Engaging Wiggly Bodies

Please help support Mrs. Povinelli - a teacher who GETS it!

Mrs. Povinelli says....

My Students: How long can you sit still before you need to fidget? Students need opportunities to move and wiggle while they are learning. These tools keep their bodies engaged so that their minds are open to new learning.

Welcome to 2nd grade. There are three of us teachers who have decided to co-teach. This means all second graders belong to the same learning community. We will have about 96 students. The students are an ethnically diverse group that comes from a wide range of socio-economic levels.

My Project: Among this group of students we have students who have been labeled "behavior problems." Most of these labels have been given to boys. We believe this label is only true because of their past environments. How can we make a positive impact on these students forever? My students need yoga balls, squeeze balls, desk-er-cisers, and a pea pod; this will give them the ability to wiggle and learn at the same time.

We want to set up an environment that helps students learn through the use of movement and active learning. We also want to give students the tools they need to work in small groups and independently with self-control. We can't wait to teach as a team and highlight our individual strengths to meet the needs of a diverse group of 2nd grade learners.
