Football: McCarthy Presented with All-American Jersey

Monrovia's star defensive lineman was formally invited to the U.S. Army All-America Bowl in a ceremony at Monrovia High School Monday.

Ellis McCarthy is accustomed to doing his damage on the field in Wildcat green and white, but he will be wearing new colors for his national debut.

McCarthy , and he was formally presented with his jeresey in a ceremony at the school on Monday.

“Ellis is a talented athlete whose leadership and teamwork qualities have made him a standout at Monrovia High School,” said John Myers, Director of Strategic Communications, Marketing and Outreach, U.S. Army Accessions Command, in a written statement. “Only the strongest wear the Army colors, and Ellis possesses similar mental, emotional and physical strengths to Army Strong Soldiers. We are proud to honor all of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl players and congratulate each of them on their selection.”

Coach Ryan Maddox will also have the opportunity to take advantage of some perks because of McCarthy's selection: he is invited to take part in the the U.S. Army Coaches Academy--"an elite three-day learning experience featuring NFL and NCAA coaches" in San Antonio, TX.

The U.S. Army All-America Bowl game bills itself as the nation’s "premier high school football game" and "preeminent launching pad for America’s future college and NFL stars." It is held at the Alamobowl in San Antonio, TX, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 and will be televised on NBC.
