Kids to Get Mars Rover Close Encounter Thursday

Kids will get to feel the Mars Rover roll over them when it is brought by JPL to a Foothill Unity Center back-to-school event Thursday.

A Mars Rover will be rolling over children Thursday when JPL brings a model rover to a event to demonstrate to kids what the suspension of the robotic vehicle feels like.

The demonstration is one of the activities planned for the center's at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. JPL will also bring along a three-dimensional image of the McMurdo Panorama--"the highest-resolution image ever taken of Mars"-- which was photographed by the Spirit rover in 2006, according to a news release from the center.

The Foothill Unity Center holds an annual back to school fair at Santa Anita Park every year, and the event this year will take place on Aug. 18.
