Plymouth Is a Finalist in Governor's Fitness Contest

The Monrovia elementary school is one of 13 Los Angeles area schools named as finalists in the Governor's Fitness Challenge Competition.

Plymouth Elementary has been named a finalist for the fourth consecutive year in the Governor's Fitness Challenge Competition, a contest that promotes physical activity in kids by setting benchmarks for them to meet or exceed.

Plymouth was one of 13 schools in the Los Angeles area and one of 116 schools state-wide to make the cut, according to a news release issued by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (GCPFS).

Kids are challenged to be physically active for 30 to 60 minutes per day, and Plymouth students, teachers and parents logged 10,800 qualifying hours.

"Congratulations to all the Plymouth students, parents and teachers who have been stepping up to make fitness a priority all year," said Jake Steinfeld, chairman of the GCPFS, in a written statement. "And a special congratulations to Principal (Michael) Hoon and Governor’s Challenge Coordinator Jennifer Mata--two great educators who have been relaying the message that being active not only helps you get healthier, it helps your mind work better and boosts your confidence and self-esteem too!”

Plymouth is now in the running for several prizes, including 6 new $100,000 fitness centers and 11 regional cash awards of $6,000, according to the GCPFS. Award winners will be announced in September.
