Wildcats Fall 21-17 to Warhawks in Heartbreaker

The 'Cats took the lead in the fourth quarter but were undone by a kick returned for a touchdown by the Warhawks.

The Madison High School Warhawks defeated Monrovia High in a CIF State Regional playoff game Saturday, eking out a 21-17 victory.

The Wildcats took a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter but promptly gave up a 91-yard kick return touchdown to the Warhawks that proved to be the deciding score.

The 'Cats got the ball back with 40 seconds left and drove into Warhawks territory before Monrovia quarterback Blake Heyworth threw an interception that sealed the team's fate.

Turnovers proved to be the deciding factor in the closely fought contest. Heyworth threw another interception in the end zone at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and the Warhawks scored their first touchdown after recovering a Monrovia fumble inside Wildcats' territory.

The Warhawks will move on to the Division III state championship bowl next weekend at the Home Depot Center.

It was a tough game a tough way to end but Monrovia had a fantastic season winning the CIF Mid Valley title for the 3rd year in a row and getting to advance to the State Regional playoffs. These boys shold be proud of how much they accomplished this season. Great season Monrovia looking forward to seeing what you guys will do next year.

Great season! This team has taken MHS to a new higher level and set a new standard of excellence for our students and community. As it has been said before, Madison did not beat us, the Wildcats just ran out of time! Now Mr. Jackson, What is with the basketball team?
Warhawk December 09, 2012 at 09:24 PM

Warchicken, Hey, you won. I get it ! The Wildcats shot themselves in the paw 3 times which lead to your 21 points. Our Wildcats out played you guys, but as you should know, you can't turn the ball over in big games and expect to win. We look forward to a rematch next year. Congratulations, and good luok next week. It is now your responsibility to represent So-Cal against NO-Cal. Try to keep your feathers out of your craw!

Warhawk, You won the game because of turnovers. You may think that means you were the better team, but not everyone will agree with that. Your local paper showed Madison with118 yds vs. Monrovia 440 yds. That speaks volumes about which team's offense was able to move the ball. You can't even say your defense was the key to the turnovers. They were all Monrovia's fault. Madison won but I will never agree they were the better team. Be happy with your win.

Stay classy, Warhawk.

We beat you guys and were gonna represent So Cal and you guys will be at home watching us! Don't talk about anything else besides you couldn't change the scoreboard and we won lmao

Classy indeed.

Warhawks: you obviously have a chicken hawk in your midst. Embarrassing for such a nice place like S.D. : ( Wildcats played an excellent match and are a class-act, hands down.
Warhawks December 10, 2012 at 01:31 AM
You're a class act saying that the better team want the better team definitely not a class act! Stop speaking non sense and admit that you're not the better team!

Well, Warhawk, it is a shame that you've come here to gloat in the face of a community that is very proud of an extraordinary team. Or perhaps three CIF-SS crowns in a row are pathetic to you. However, football games are won and lost on execution, and our four turnovers certainly did outweigh our otherwise superior performance. That said, if Marin outgains the Warhawks 4:1 (like Monrovia did) then you folks better pray their quarterback keeps throwing into triple coverage AND their kicker has an off night. Because, like last night, that's the only way you'll win. Stay classy, San Diego!

Warhawk, you are sounding like an immature fool here. Pity you feel you represent your school's football community because the visiting fans I spoke to all seemed quite nice. YOU had nothing to do with the team winning. Our boys had some unfortunate mistakes that ended up losing the game for them. They are winners in our eyes because they have dedication and strength and sportsmanship. They outplayed Madison, but did not outscore Madison and therefore lost. We realize that....and you know what? It changes NOTHING about how we feel about the Monrovia Wildcats. We are tremendously proud of their achievements. Congratulations and good luck next week Madison Warhawks. And to just plain old Warhawk that is posting on here...ahhh...never mind..."if you haven't got anything nice to say..."
