Wildcats Fall 21-17 to Warhawks in Heartbreaker

The 'Cats took the lead in the fourth quarter but were undone by a kick returned for a touchdown by the Warhawks.

The Madison High School Warhawks defeated Monrovia High in a CIF State Regional playoff game Saturday, eking out a 21-17 victory.

The Wildcats took a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter but promptly gave up a 91-yard kick return touchdown to the Warhawks that proved to be the deciding score.

The 'Cats got the ball back with 40 seconds left and drove into Warhawks territory before Monrovia quarterback Blake Heyworth threw an interception that sealed the team's fate.

Turnovers proved to be the deciding factor in the closely fought contest. Heyworth threw another interception in the end zone at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and the Warhawks scored their first touchdown after recovering a Monrovia fumble inside Wildcats' territory.

The Warhawks will move on to the Division III state championship bowl next weekend at the Home Depot Center.
