Wildcats Victory Parade Invades Old Town

The two-time CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division champion Monrovia High School football team celebrated their 2011 title in a parade Thursday.

Rain dampened the for the football team but clear skies Thursday allowed a bus and sleigh full of Wildcats to motor through the city to celebrate their .

Winners of the CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division championship in December, the Wildcats found themselves at another celebration in Thursday to commemorate the achievement.

"You have won back-to-back CIF championships, which has all the makings of a dynasty for years to come at Monrovia High School," said MHS Principal Darvin Jackson.

In a ceremony on the steps beneath the fountain in Library Park, both the school board and City Council proclaimed Jan. 12 as Monrovia Wildcat Day. Players were introduced one-by-one to applause and Jackson handed MHS football coach Ryan Maddox the championship plaque to pass around.

Last year's championship was the first in the school's 75 year history, so the last two teams are responsible for winning all of the city's football championships.

"It took us a while to get this one done, but now I see nothing stopping us from getting a couple more," School Board President Bryan Wong said. "No pressure."

Mayor Mary Ann Lutz congratulated parents and students as well in describing what she called a "great victory."

"We congratulate this football team for their honors today," Lutz said. "They have shown that hard work, persevearance, and just getting out there and kicking somevyou-know-what makes you win. And that's what Monrovia is all about."
