The Future of our Wilderness Preserve in Question?

Shall the Monrovia Wilderness Preserve become a part of a new National Recreation Area as proposed by Congress Member Judy Chu? The National Park Service has recently released a study that would have a portion of Monrovia be included in the San Gabriel Mountain and Watershed National Recreation Area, possibly as administered along with the Santa Monica Mountains.

Apparently the Federal Government has spent the past 10 years or so looking at what can be done to make the San Gabriel Mountains serve the needs of the public better. Complaints of trash, poor parking, lack of signage and maps have prompted some to suggest that the creation of a new National Recreation Area (NRA) is the answer.

As you may recall, several years ago Monrovia voters went to the polls and voted to tax themselves so we may be able to control the direction of our Foothills. This lead to the creation of the Monrovia Wilderness Preserve and after a few years of studies and the adoption of a Management Plan Monrovia is close to opening the area. The question is this, are our Foothills better controlled by us or by the Department of the Interior?
