MHS Robotics teams continue to win awards at regional qualifying tournaments.

MHS Robotics teams continue to win awards at regional qualifying tournaments. Plus, the Kings & Queens qualify for LA FTC Regional Championships!

Last weekend (1/11/2014) the Monrovia High School Robotics program sent the Suit Bots and the Kings & Queens to the LA FTC Regional Qualifying Tournament in Perris, CA. The Suit Bots won the PTC Design Award and the Kings & Queens won the Think Award and placed 3rd for the Inspire Award.

The PTC Design Award - won by the Suit Bots is a judged award that "... recognizes design elements of the robot that are both functional and aesthetic. ...the PTC Design Award is presented to teams that (best) incorporate industrial design elements into their solution."

The Think Award - won by the Kings & Queens is "... given to the team that best reflects the “journey” the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season."

The Inspire Award - 3rd place Kings & Queens,  is the tournaments top award and  "...is given to the team that truly embodied the ‘challenge’ of the FTC program. The team that receives this award is chosen by the judges as having best represented a ‘role-model‘ FTC Team. This team is a top contender for all other judging categories and is a strong competitor on the field."

In addition to the Judged awards both teams performed exceptionally well on the field. Both made it into the elimination rounds where the Suit Bots were part of the 3rd seeded alliance and the Kings & Queens were part of the 2nd seeded alliance. At the end of a long and exciting day the Kings & Queens found themselves in the finals where they lost to an very strong alliance led by the Metal Ducks from San Diego's Western Center Academy.

Based on their top five performance the Kings & Queen qualified for the LA FTC Regional Championships to be held at Monrovia High School, Feb. 22nd.

Next up for the MHS Robotics Program is the Glendale LA FTC Regional Qualifying Tournament which will be held January, 25th. All four MHS teams will compete in this tournament.

The MHS Robotics Program is made up 32 students split up into 4 teams: RED, Suit Bots, Kings & Queens and Thavma. Each team has its own name and identity and builds, designs and competes its own robot in the FIRST Tech Challenge.
