County Animal Shelters Helping Cats Find Homes

Summertime is when animal control agencies begin seeing an increase in kittens entering shelters.

As summertime approaches in Southern California, “kitten season,” a time when animal control agencies begin seeing a significant increase in kittens entering local shelters, is in full swing.

In the midst of the season, while the focus remains mainly on the young kittens that enter County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) animal care centers, adult cats are often overlooked.

To help adult cats find forever homes, Found Animals Foundation, www.foundanimals.org, is sponsoring a new summer promotion, "9 Lives for $9."

Potential adopters can take advantage of the promotion, which is geared towards adult cats, 9 months of age and older.  Now through the end of August, the cost to adopt an adult cat will be $9 flat. All cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and implanted with a microchip.  The promotion is valid at all DACC locations (as well as other locations- visit the Found Animals website for a complete list of locations). The Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, 4275 Elton Street, serves Walnut, Diamond Bar and unincorporated areas of Glendora.

"Our adult cats have a difficult time finding new homes, especially in the middle of kitten season. We are excited and hopeful to see our adult cat adoption rate rise.  Adult cats are generally low maintenance and make wonderful pets,” said DACC director, Marcia Mayeda.

Here are just a few benefits of adopting an adult cat:

  • Adult cats are less maintenance than kittens.  They often come from previous homes and are usually well mannered and litter-box trained.
  • They are more independent and do not require someone to be home all the time.  They are the ideal for employed, active, and busy owners.
  • There will be no surprises. With an adult cat, you will have an accurate idea of the cat’s full grown size and temperament.
  • Adult cats are less rambunctious and get into less mischief than kittens and may be a better option for small children and seniors.
