5 Great Monrovia Nonprofits

A wide range of nonprofits that run the full gamut of services enhances the lives of all Monrovians.

Monrovia is lucky to have nonprofit organizations that fill a wide variety of needs in the local area, from children’s services and aid for the needy to reading programs and the arts. Monrovia has many groups willing to help, and they in turn are usually in need of help. Here’s a brief sampling of just five:

1)

This organization has been in the area for over 16 years, providing guidance to children of all ages so that they can “reach their potential as caring, responsible, productive citizens.” Especially focusing on disadvantaged kids, the Boys and Girls Club has provided a safe haven for Monrovia’s youth.

2)

Every city needs a group that helps promote and support the local library and Monrovia’s is one of the more active. Offering literacy programs, volunteers and community outreach, the Friends of the Monrovia Public Library acts to stimulate the use of the library as well as promoting education and reading.

3)

Monrovia’s most prominent charitable organization is Foothill Unity. Located at 415 W. Chestnut, Foothill Unity maintains one of the areas largest food banks and is always in need of donations and help. Their have become the stuff of legend, serving an ever increasing number of local families in tough economic times. Their Mission Statement says it best: "We help neighbors in crisis attain self-sufficiency by partnering with the community and using our resources wisely to provide vital support services with love and dignity.”

4)

In the past 10 years, MAFA has risen from a small group that struggled to stage one small art fair a year into one of the city’s most active organizations. Not only do they put on the but have added summer art walks, , and have donated close to $10,000 over the past couple of years to a variety of groups to enhance the arts. In addition, MAFA works with the city on the program, providing enrichment to the whole community.

5)

Everyone knows about the Y. What most people don’t know is that Monrovia’s branch (which also serves Duarte and Arcadia) is not just about exercise and sports. The Santa Anita Y has after school homework help, offers child care, and a” service, and Family Fun Nights. Currently, plans are in the works to partner with MAFA in offering an Arts program.

Clearly, Monrovia has a rich offering of opportunities and help from a wide range of caring, committed people. This is by no means a complete list, nor are these in anyway better than others. Please feel free to add more non-profits that have touched the lives of local citizens.
