Dia De Los Muertos Celebrated at Live Oak Memorial in Monrovia

Live Oak Memorial Park on Duarte Road today will host its annual Dia Del Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration.

The event kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with face painting. Mass starts at noon.  The Aztec Dancers will perform at 1:30 p.m. and the Mariachis from 3 to 5 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a picture of their loved ones for the wall of remembrance and prepare and decorate an altar at their love one's grave, according to organizers.

Mexico and other Latin American countries celebrate Dia De Los Muertos annually starting Nov. 2. It is a day to remember loved ones who have died.

The holiday typically includes families going to the cemetery to clean and decorate the graves of their relatives. Grave-sight altars get decorated with food such as skulls made of sugar or bread.

Some will paint their faces to resemble devils or skeletons or wear skeleton masks.

Live Oak plans to keep its gates open until 8 p.m. The cemetery is located at 200 E. Duarte Road.
