Re bird feeders: if you're a hummingbird fanatic like me, you take them down and secure them everyRead More evening and put them up at the crack of dawn every morning - no days off, no vacations. The same goes for my sunflower seed feeders. It's a good thing I don't have a life:-)
Fredric L. Rice May 15, 2013 at 01:01 pm
Love seeing that hiker given a citation, he can explain his crimes to the Judge and explain how he'sRead More exempt from the laws that us little people must follow.
Mike Lee May 11, 2013 at 03:04 pm
The law requires that suspects, arrested for misdemeanors, get released on a citation after aRead More sobering period.
Ellen Zunino May 10, 2013 at 06:23 pm
(It's just so very difficult to get a babysitter on short notice.) The laws of nature dictateRead More that, for 99% of the higher orders of animals, the female of a species will choose her mate based on his ability to "provide" and will expend a tremendous amount of energy caring for her offspring, which represent the continuation of the species into the future. What happened that causes human females to choose losers for mates and treat their kids like expendables?

"Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance / Vandalism / Mentally Disturbed Subject May 8Read More at 6:39 a.m., police received a call reporting a male subject knocking on doors and claiming to be a preacher." /taking bets...it was "Lola..."
Joan Ochoa Sullivan May 9, 2013 at 01:26 am
Well Said!
R. Ray Morford May 8, 2013 at 11:08 pm
It's disturbing when a 10yr old becomes defiant. The child has problems that can take time to workRead More out. He's not a throw away child. I sincerely hope Law Enforcement can find a way to keep him out of the Criminal Justice System. He can become a hardened criminal at a young age or a useful citizen with hope in his life. I'm rooting for HOPE.
Lizkolberg May 8, 2013 at 09:31 pm
Great news. Glad he is safe
SYLVIA WILLIAMS May 8, 2013 at 09:20 pm

Unless there has been some ongoing abuse in the home...Shouldn't be concerned as to theRead More "why's", just pls stay on the look out for this kid!! Who cares why!!!

Hey Karl- I know more than a few people that smoke, for various reasons...I am PRO medical MJ. AfterRead More surgery I was told to use it and I did. I heard the manager ask her to watch her language twice, she was very loud, and became hostile when she was made aware that children were around and her music and language would not be tolerated...by the management. He was polite. I didn't speak to her. I watched. I heard. I wondered if even if you have a card, if you can toke up anywhere. Don't know the rules, got curious. I was not offended by her. There were no cops present, who knows if she isn't afraid. The manager of the laundry mat was HIGHLY annoyed. I didn't ask her what ailed her NOR did ask her if what she was doing was "OK" in public. I am not the manager, truthfully I was somewhat amused she packed a bowl and blazed up. I observed this, and wondered if it was legal or how people manage it if they smoke. She told the manager "not to hate", not me. She was 20 something, Asian, rather angry, and throwin' down gangsta signs... I don't have an opinion about her either way. I have no idea if she was suffering. I have no emotional response about it. Her behavior would have been classified as anti-social by law enforcement or mental health care providers. Question answered, no hate. Got it.
karl bolshiehater May 9, 2013 at 02:37 am
Does the card prohibit open use of one's medical drugs? Does it say you may not offend middle agedRead More males by showing them that marijuana is a drug that works to save lives and souls? Nope.
karl bolshiehater May 9, 2013 at 02:35 am
She could have PTSD, neuralgia, or worse. Don't be a hater. :) sounds like you judged a book by itsRead More cover when you might have asked her what ailed her, or in fact minded your own business. Normally you are pretty funny but here I see prejudice against what... Young women who say things you don't like? Young women who aren't scared of the cops?
rubberband May 6, 2013 at 03:31 pm
Yep, Robert, I'd pay that. No problem here. Especially since it appears my street is fire prone!Read More Haven't had a land line in years. Makes me think maybe that was a bad idea.... Normally I hate texts/texting and I'm not a facebook/social media kinda guy...My phone is for who what where when not chatting...so THIS text I'd appreciate and pay for.
Robert Parry May 6, 2013 at 01:36 pm
The price is $30k for three years. I wonder what that's based on. Perhaps the City should pay aRead More basic system set-up cost and then have subscribers pay an additional fee. If it were $3 for three years, I imagine they'd get a lot of users (certainly from this household), and it would defray the cost. If not enough folks sign up, then that probably says something about the value the community places on such a service.
rubberband May 5, 2013 at 05:13 pm
Yep Bjo. I agree. This would be a useful thing to spend money on. I was among the first before MPDRead More got to the big "Madison Incident" fire... Watching the hills go up in flame was freaky. We were at teh VERY top of Madison and pointed the access point out to the cop who showed up and then bailed outta there to make room for emergency services. A text to people who lived up there or close by would have been a good thing. p.s. To all the looky loos who felt is necessary to drive up Madison, WE WERE THE ONES PREVENTING YOU FROM COMING UP... Next time you see like 30 fire engines, trying to go around them and drive up to "get a closer look" is a bone head thing to do. I get the curious thing, but getting in the way was uncool.
rubberband May 5, 2013 at 07:39 pm
With all the super awful stuff that can happen, I'm gonna call shenanigans on this one. Sounds kindaRead More pranky and silly. It was like friends coming home to find all the patio furniture arranged EXACTLY the same, down to the candles and statuary, IN THE POOL. Harmless, and creative...took pictures of them sitting in it, under water.
Buzlightyear aka marty May 5, 2013 at 06:04 pm
I would call it burglary in progress, and probably ran out the back door when the agent arrived.
rubberband May 4, 2013 at 01:41 pm
but thanks for answering my question. (note to self : don't move other people's stuff around.)
rubberband May 2, 2013 at 03:23 pm
@R.Ray Morford: I agree with you. 100%. MPD did exactly what they were supposed to do. My point isRead More that because dopey dude choose to run thru a school, HE should also be held liable for the cost/risk of doing so. I am GLAD they had a lock down and protected the kids/staff. Yep. No child was injured, talked to a kid from Clifton right after he got home and he said things were handled rather smoothly and at no time did staff panic. Running thru a school is a seriously stupid choice, which is no surprise as the guy has a list of bad choices. Throw the book at him HARD.
R. Ray Morford May 2, 2013 at 03:09 pm
O.K......School Lock Down's are expensive. But think of the alternative. A child is injured becauseRead More a felon is loose and the Law did not take proper precaution. Ching Ching Ching.....You pay. Thanks MPD.
rubberband May 2, 2013 at 01:35 pm
First response yea me: I say again....for anyone who thinks I don't have the "LURVE" forRead More MPD. GOOD JOB MPD. School lock downs cost money and cause fear and upset for students/staff. Lock him up. See? love and peace. Love and peace.
CECE May 2, 2013 at 01:38 pm
IF PD WAS SO GREAT.HOW COME HE GOT AWAY AND DID NOT GET HIM WHAT ABOUT 7;00 ON CALIFORNIA ST ARead More BLOCK FROM THE SCHOOL.
rubberband May 2, 2013 at 01:33 pm
LOL I call troll.
CECE May 2, 2013 at 01:32 pm
know we dont
Totally anonymous May 2, 2013 at 05:05 pm
Suzy and bill I agree with both of you I know Jim personally and he is a funny guy. If you don'tRead More want a ticket slow down, don't California stop at a top sign.
Bill C. May 2, 2013 at 03:11 pm
Whatever you feel you want to do. Jim Mead is a good guy, that's all I can tell you and peopleRead More drive worse now more than ever with the distractions of cell phones that so many drivers use though they know they shouldn't. It's a field day for traffic officers every day all day.
Suzy May 2, 2013 at 02:00 pm
Officer Mead has been with the MPD for over 20 years. He is one of Monrovias finest! You need toRead More remember Officer Mead does not make the laws, he has sworn to enforce them. Remember by signing a ticket you are not admitting guilt, it's just a promise appear. Everyone that he writes a ticket to can fight it in court. I think that most of the people of Monrovia feel they have sense of entitlement, like the laws don't apply to them. Yes, it slows down your day when you get pulled over, it kinda throws you off, it makes you mad that your late for work or the gym BUT don't take it out on the Officer. It is not Officer Meads job to be funny, nice and wonderful, it is his job to Protect and Serve!
rubberband May 4, 2013 at 05:51 pm
@Dustin. Yea. Trust me...there are many.Luckily it's just like that ONE cop. The rest are prettyRead More cool. Some of them are some of the best people I know. MPD shows up in my neck of the woods and have been professional and look in shape and ready to handle stuff. They are polite and very helpful in my experience.
rubberband May 4, 2013 at 05:48 pm
Okee doke. Makes sense. I remember being a kid and sticking my tongue out at a cop while stoppedRead More at a light. Cop laughed. Dad smacked my head. Dad got pulled over and cop asked me if I was OK and told my Dad not to hit me. It was a confusing day. I am SUPER polite to police now. Like UBER polite.
Dustin Le May 4, 2013 at 05:18 pm
Seems that this plus-sized motorcycle cop has annoyed more people than just myself...
Totally anonymous May 1, 2013 at 02:29 am
Who is going to pay for the cost of fighting the fire. It should be the home owner but doubt it.Read More Didn't he or isn't he on the planing Commission and he has a old friend on the City Council. So you know what that means the city will absorb the cost.
sheila April 28, 2013 at 07:49 pm
I have a ? for you. Would germination of the nature plant species and replanting them help get ridRead More of the weed and prevent them from taking over?
Ellen Zunino April 28, 2013 at 06:01 pm
1. Don't be cheap. Hire someone who knows what they are doing. Unskilled laborers should beRead More supervised. 2. Landscape (including ground cover) to prevent the growth of flash fuels and the need for continual maintenance of the property. The removal of weedy annual species depletes the soil and creates the perfect environment for the germination of additional invasive weeds. Allowing weedy species to set seed helps them move farther and farther into the hills, displacing natives (including annual wildflowers), filling in the inter-plant spaces between natives and increasing the risk of fast-spreading fires. 3. Annual weedy species germinate, mature and set seed early, out-competing natives and ensuring their own continued existence. Remove them ASAP, like by March.

Nice work! I like to read a positive story. We have had car break-ins in the past in our neighborhoodRead More in the Mayflower Village and it's a terrible feeling. I'm so glad they caught this guy.
rubberband April 26, 2013 at 05:33 pm
MPD kicks criminal butt. Most of the force is awesome and professional.
Lisa & Mike Tedei April 26, 2013 at 12:27 am
Glad to know our neighbors are okay! Thank you Monrovia PD for keeping our neighborhood safe!
Dan Crandell April 23, 2013 at 11:09 pm
I have repaired or replaced my gates several times over the years. A bear goes where it chooses toRead More go and will eat what it chooses to eat. Even if I brought the trash container into the house that wouldn't stop a bear. We are all well aware of that, are we not. I've lost patients with those people who say "don't feed the bears" . Give me a break.
rubberband April 23, 2013 at 10:46 pm
Monrovia pizza company makes a meatball pizza. Get that next time.
Buzlightyear aka marty April 23, 2013 at 10:18 pm
Keep feeding the bears. I depend on them being in the city partying while I'm trail running from Mt.Read More Wilson..... down hill.... in the dark.....by myself....with a lapsed health, and life insurance... ...oh gee, back to Griffith Park again....
rubberband April 30, 2013 at 04:01 pm
Kelly, loving the bears at a distance is a really smart plan. They don't like the up close kindaRead More love. These aren't Disney bears, folks. They don't want to be "friends"
Kelly April 30, 2013 at 03:56 pm
find it a bit concerning that the bears are entering homes more often, at least we seem to beRead More hearing about home entries more often. I do love our bears, but at a distance.

I accidentally left my back door open and heard something on the service porch, went to take a lookRead More and there was a little skunk eating the cat food. I figured the best thing to do was go back to what I was doing and checked in 15 minutes and the skunk and food were gone , I just quickly closed the door. ;-)
Jean A. King April 24, 2013 at 11:29 am
A special THANK YOU to our firefighters and the excellent air coverage we had. The helicopters wereRead More flying over my house all day and into the early evening. Thanks for a job well done and I'm so happy we didn't loose any more of our beautiful hills. With different wind it could-have been so much worse.
rubberband April 23, 2013 at 03:51 pm
I think if I lived up that high in the hills I'd have a huge water filled mote...and I'd build outRead More of concrete... Very surprised and glad MORE wasn't burned. Our hills are pretty crispy... Good job fire fighters...
Benicetoothers April 23, 2013 at 03:41 am
Really say it....?
Ellen Zunino April 23, 2013 at 06:44 pm
The problem with clearing "brush" is removing the low-biomass native fuels and lettingRead More high-biomass weedy species - especially grasses - take their place. The establishment of large areas of these "flash fuels" increases the fire danger. Another consideration is that, since we don't live in Minnesota, it's good to remember that the majority of our trees should be trimmed from August through January when they are semi- or fully dormant and only the subtropicals like Citrus, Ficus, the fall-bearing Avocados and a few others should be trimmed during the warmer Spring weather. Late Winter through Spring is also the time when both resident and migratory bird species are nesting locally and off-season tree trimming destroys nests, nestlings and drives adult birds away.
Greg Sweet April 22, 2013 at 08:20 pm
Also, it was a fire clearance job that ignited the Monrovia fire.
Dustin Le April 22, 2013 at 11:56 am
Well said, also worth mentioning is the fact that the native plants help to hold the hillsidesRead More together during a heavy rain...
Jean A. King April 24, 2013 at 11:41 am
I can only speak for myself, and I didn't have to evacuate, bur I received two (2) computerizedRead More phone calls about where the fire was and the second one suggested we evacuate. Both calls mentioned the Monrovia Community Center as the place to go and also said that the police wouldn't be going door to door to let us know. We're on North May and didn't feel the need to leave. .For us personally, it was handled beautifully.
genevieve April 23, 2013 at 06:40 am
This is the standard procedure. It is a frightening experience for any evacuatee. People could getRead More the information as far as where to relocate by asking police away from the danger area. They do not have time to have a conversation with you. We also had to evacuate. We had family and friends at our home putting things in our car, preparing just in case we did have to evacuate. This is the way it is. The Police couldn't have been nicer.
sayitisntso April 22, 2013 at 06:51 pm
The Council and management are at fault. Mayor Lutz has bragged through the years on how preparedRead More Monrovia is to deal with disasters but when we have one like the big windstorms or this fire we find out what a CLUSTER the city's desperateness really is NOT. ALL LIP SERVICE! After the windstorm and complaints from residents about the city's lack of response we were told by then City manager Ochoa and Mayor Lutz that we should not rely on the city for help and we needed to help ourselves. What do we pay taxes for??? If that is the case then let us help ourselves. Don't lock us out of our neighborhoods if we are not at home when the fire starts. If you are going to prevent us from helping ourselves then it is your responsibility to help us. Do your jobs and do them right and don't make lame excuses about why you don't need to after you prevented us from dealing with it.
Cara April 22, 2013 at 06:54 pm
Thank you to the Monrovia fire Dept and all the first responders! You did an amazing job! Thank youRead More for doing everything necessary to keep our beautiful community safe. What a well coordinated and organized effort! Great job!!
B Ulm April 21, 2013 at 07:25 pm
I cannot thank the Monrovia fire department and all the coordinated support agencies enough forRead More their incredible efforts to contain this and incredibly - not loose a single structure. So glad to hear no firefighters were hurt beyond someone with heat exhaustion. Thanks for all you do and stay safe as the efforts continue.
Debbie E Pocino April 21, 2013 at 12:54 pm
Are they allowing residents on Heather Heights Ct. above Scenic to go back to their homes? An updateRead More would be appreciated.
