Thank you Lori! I guess that is WHY we need the petitions! We should all do our homework....

Monrovia does not have a failing school system. They have made sacrifices and adjustments early on…Read More to be financially responsible. The schools have high state scores. Most of the schools have won state awards. Like most California schools, Monrovia has a very high percentage of children who speak English as a second language and the challenge is meeting their needs to the best of Monrovia's ability. The goal is to do what ever it takes to improve teaching methods for English language learners and ALL Monrovia children. Debbie Collins has always been open to doing what ever it takes to improve Monrovia Unified. Debbie Collins has worked in the district long enough to know what works and what has not worked. She has worked hard for the district because she likes the community. Our previous superintendent, Linda Wagner, was not really bright and had little interest in the community and as a result accomplished nothing. You are correct, we are not picking the "Homecoming Queen", we are picking someone with experience and someone who has invested in our community.

That's right! Take someone who has been part of running a failed District and put them in charge of…Read More running that District..
When will people stop wanting to hire people to run a business based on a popularity contest.
High School is over, we are not picking the Home Coming Queen here, we are picking a MUSD Superintendent.
Ursula Monteblanco May 2, 2013 at 02:52 am
I totally agree!!! Debby Collins should be hired as the next MUSD superintendent. She has what it…Read More takes to be a great leader. Debby Collins has the experience, knowledge, and most important of all, the love and the passion for the students, teachers, and families. We need to stop looking somewhere else and focus on a proven leader that will get the job done and exceed expectations. She is and will continue to be an asset for the Monrovia Unified School District.

I thought the CIF banned student athletes "shopping" for schools.

The students are given a topic for their video and about 5 hours to tape on one day. They then are…Read More given about 3 hours to edit their footage the following day. This year's assignment was to create a 60 second promotional video for SkillsUSA that revolved around the theme of "partnership". The purpose of the video was to be suitable for people in the organization to show to people in Industry, Schools, and Communities to encourage participation in SkillsUSA, a national vocational training organization.

Congratulations to the Video Production Team. This is a very competitive category! Awesome and…Read More good luck at Nationals!! Once again Monrovia High School Shines! Way to go Wildcats!
Ellen Zunino April 9, 2013 at 12:09 am
I'm dying to know more about the competition. What do thevideo production teams do? Submit work or…Read More successfully complete a task that's given to them at the competition? What other schools - any local? - competed. I looked at the updated listing of competitive events and it was a huge weekend in San Diego. Congratulations to the winners and their winner parents.

What a great decision by the Citrus Foundations Board to add Steve Baker to their ranks! Steve will…Read More do an amazing job and our entire community will benefit! Thank you for all the time you donate and Congratulations Steve!
Maria Barnes April 3, 2013 at 08:13 pm
Well said she is the best of the best hard working dedicated and 100 percent caring for our students…Read More and staff. Good luck Debby

I am glad to see the Board is giving Ms. Collins an opportunity to act as Superintendent while it…Read More conducts a search. I hope the Board will remember that anyone who is appointed acting or interim to the top position in an organization is limited in their ability to lead the organization because the Board has yet to confer its full confidence in the individual. To Ms. Collins, I hope you do well, after all your years of service you deserve a chance. To the Board, I hope you don't let pettiness or self-righteousness deny a longtime and hardworking staffer a fair shot at the job.

Are we still hiring that search firm for 23K? Why not just put this lady in the Job? Guess because…Read More we'll get "sued" again and "settle" again for "breaching" again a non contractual "agreement". In this city all one has to do is make the claim and a check gets expedited to your bank account.

Do we know why the young man has been in multiple high schools? I don't think we should judge that.…Read More It could be that his parents had to move. In this economy, anything is possible. Let's just welcome him and wish him the best. He may be an athlete, but he's just a kid, and being an athlete may be how he excels. No aspersions on him or his folks. Don't know the young man and just hope he is happy at MHS.

I've been lucky enough to volunteer @ my kids school and see the everyday needs of the schools. We…Read More have sent kids back to class to tell their teacher we cannot make copies for instruction b/c we cannot get more toner. Our school does not have an after school sports program b/c we are told there is no money. No GATE money for years. The smart boards & upgrades we were told we would get a couple of years ago, has not happened. Our library is now replacing books with the help of PTA, replacing books from 1950's, 60,s b/c again, no money. I know $23,000 cannot meet all the needs of our schools but it feels like just another "we know better". I invite board members not to just visit a school for an hour but really, spend a day with the staff, volunteers, kids & listen to their needs. You will not need a headhunter to tell you what our kids need!

There may be time to rescind the purported contract. When do these people stop in executing funds to…Read More firms outside of Monroiva? How do you justify this? How do the members arrive at such a hairbrained analysis. How many school lunches could that have provided for students who are hungry? I require a NEW HEART BEAT in this City. Absolute insanity!

The next person sitting in the seat as superintendent has to be someone who is forward thinking, but…Read More knows how to squeeze a dollar when it comes to educational spending. Money is not there as it should be, and the superintendent needs to bring to the table quality skill sets how to conceivably derive additional revenue including grants (which should persistently be on our radar) and through things like DonorsChoose.org. The superintendent needs to have innovative ways to bring 21st technology and attendant skills to the classroom while not sacrificing traditional core skills. In addition, (s)he must be able to work well within the constraints of an increasingly litigious society. So, I don't have a problem if we look far and wide to find that right person. It could be that person is already at home, here, but it's possible the best is elsewhere and, since money is at a premium and we cannot afford to sacrifice the education of our young people, I'm ok with this expenditure. I don't think our Board of Education, no matter the skills they bring to the table in this very part-time job, is best qualified to do the search, but they can dig into resumes of those referred by the headhunter. I would suggest that the hiring process include not only the board, but a representative teacher or administrator from each school and one or more key parents (PTA or ?). This is a critical staff member who will need the support of all. Bringing them to the hiring table may help.

It's for OUR children. Everything that involves children costs us 2-3 times as much because…Read More "they" have grabbed US by OUR heartstrings. Who gets these bucks is the real question here. We are saps for allowing that question to go unanswered.

I'm curious how the MUSD election is projected to cost more than double what the City's does -- and…Read More for fewer seats.

In all fairness if Mr. Jessie was inappropriate with female students he would NOT have been cleared.…Read More Ms Luna was and is a counselor and a counselors job is to help and support students. Mrs. Esquer is Santa Fe's Vice-Principal in charge of discipline. Mrs Esquer is fair and patient but if a student continues to break the rules then she may appear "scary"; that's the nature of her job. In the classroom she is great. She never walked around crying and never spoke publicly about this situation. She has always been professional.

/sigh....
Talk to your kids about things that happen at school with compassion and listen...really…Read More listen to what they say.

Clifton Middle School has always been at the cutting-edge of educational innovation. As the former…Read More Vice President and President of the Clifton Middle School Cubs, I am proud of our recent recognition and desire for all of our schools to be recognized for their efforts in narrowing and closing student achievement gaps, I am blessed to have attended Monrovia schools and was fortunate to have leaders like Don Montgomery and Eliott Dubois to pave the way for my personal progress and the educational excellence of the entire community. Congratulations to the team of MUSD Board members, administrators, teachers, parents, students, and volunteers for a job well done! :-)

Our schools are excellent. I heard Mr. Jackson is moving into the Superintendent position. He has…Read More worked miracles at MHS and I suspect his talent will further our schools, even more.
Let's hope the quality of our schools doesn't lead to sudden over crowding both of our town and schools like certain neighboring communities ;)

In my prior job at a fortune 500 company I was part of an employee contribution committee that chose…Read More issues to donate to. After some fact digging - reducing school graduation drop out rates became our team's unanimously agreed upon goal. Its obvious to anyone with the information that the drop out rate contributes to so many problems from gang participation to being impoverished from inability to find a decent paying job. Well done and very happy to see this going in the right directions to give our kids a fighting chance at being independent and successful in their lives!

Congratulations to the graduates of MHS! Great job at the high school - it shows what happens when…Read More school district board, administrators, principal, teachers and students keep their eye on the ball and put education first! A great accomplishment for all concerned!
