Bear Breaks into Duarte Home, Helps Self to Food on Kitchen Counter

Authorities chased away a bear cub that broken into the kitchen of a Duarte home Wednesday and hopped up on the kitchen counter to chow down.

A Duarte resident discovered a bear cub eating food on her kitchen counter on Wednesday afternoon, according to a sheriff's news release.

The woman found the bear cub at about 1:56 p.m. in the kitchen of her home in the on Crestview Court, the release states. The woman ran upstairs, locked herself in a bathroom and called authorities.

An animal control officer and sheriff's deputy arrived and attempted to scare the bear off.

"They left the door open and made noises to scare the bear," the release states. "The bear ran out via the front door and into the surrounding forest area."

The California Department of Fish and Game was notified of the incident, according to the release.
